Tara is one of #AncestryHour's long-standing volunteers and is always on the lookout for interesting snippets to share with our followers! Her own ancestry is a mixture of English and Irish, with some of her lines traced back to the early 1700s in south western England and some Irish lines traced back to the late 1700s. Their stories include murder, mystery, mayhem, majesty, and the mundane. She describes herself as congenitally curious, inheriting her family’s passion for local history and genealogy.
Tara’s previous role as a research consultant helped her hone her digital detective and general research skills. Now, she uses those skills in her work as a part-time genealogist, finding novel sources and texts to help locate ancestors and their descendants. She combines social history with the facts that have been revealed during the research, providing a richer understanding of the lives of our ancestors. Although she specialises in Irish genealogy, her work has included researching the Irish diaspora in places as far afield as South Africa and New Zealand. She particularly enjoys collaborating with others to help them develop their skills in tracing Irish ancestors and enhance their knowledge and understanding of the social and historical context of their ancestors’ lives and times.
In recent years, Tara has been awarded a M.A. in the History of the Family by the University of Limerick. She has published and given presentations based on her thesis, which used oral histories to examine family life in rural Ireland.
